National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History

The museum has three sections - ethnography, natural sciences and the pavilion exhibition „Nature Ecology and Culture of Moldova”. Over the years, the museum has created many exhibitions that reflect natural history, contemporary nature, the evolution of human society and traditional culture, thus promoting Moldovan customs, the relationship „Man-Nature” and the ecological condition of the Republic of Moldova. 

On the territory of the museum is the first Botanical Garden, founded in 1906 by the Society of Naturalists. Within the Botanical Garden was organized a Vivarium with permanent exhibitions of rare, exotic and decorative birds, reptiles and fish.

Heritage: 

• The heritage of the museum totaling over 140.000 pieces, is constituted by numerous geological, paleontological, zoological, entomological, archeological, ethnographic, numismatic collections, many of which are very valuable or even unique.

• Of unique value are the skeleton of a „Dinoterium Gigantisimus” with an age of 7 million years, the archaeological treasures of Carbuna, Larguta, Dorotcaia, the collection of Bessarabian carpets from the XVIIIth-XXth centuries and others.

Good to know! Being the oldest institution in the field, the museum contributed to the creation and development of most museums in the R. M. (Republic of Moldova). Pieces from the museum's collections have been exhibited at various exhibitions in many countries in Europe, America, Africa and Asia.
