Old Orhei is a place where everything breathes history. The process of forming the current landscape of the Old Orhei area begins during the Middle Sarmatian period of the Miocene, about 13.0 million years ago, when the territory was the bottom of a brackish sea, known in the literature as the „Paratethys sea”. This area has been populated and partially urbanized since the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. On the surface of the promontories there are traces of Geto-Dacian fortresses (V-III centuries before Christ) and medieval towns - Sehr al-Cedid, built by the Tartar-Mongols (XIV century) and Old Orhei - built by the Moldavians (XV-XVI centuries). In the limestone cliffs are located Christian cave monasteries, hermitages and religious inscriptions arranged in stone by monks in the medieval and modern period.
